1 = 6! / 5! - 5
2 = chocolate fish
3 = 6! / 5! x 0.5
4 = 5 + 5 - 6
5 = (6 - 5) x 5
6 = 5/5 x 6
7 = 5/5 +6
8 = 0.6 x 5 + 5
9 = chocolate fish
10 = chocolate fish

ReplyDeleteSeveral students have worked on this problem. You can see Ethan's solution for the number 2 at; http://kidblog.org/investiGATE2011/author/Ethan348797/ and Sonya's solution for 10 at; http://kidblog.org/investiGATE2011/sonya31/chocolate-fish-comp/#comment-72
ReplyDeleteHi Mrs Harris, I was wondering if this would be a valid answer to 9: 5+5-6°
ReplyDelete5 plus 5 minus (six to the power of zero)
I wasnt sure if i could use that zero.
Hi Rani. Great to hear from you. This solution is great thinking but NO you can not use the 0. You remember the rules...only the three numbers given on the dice. Since this post has generated such interest I will continue to post the problems we have trouble with in class. Keep puzzling and keep watching!
ReplyDeleteI gave this problem to this Chinese maths group on Facebook and they said it was impossible to get 9. So that must mean it's impossible. But I was thinking about it today since I was bored and found something that gets pretty close to nine:
ReplyDelete(5 times pi) divided by 5 (which leaves u with pi)plus 6
which gives u 9.14..blahblahblah...
sorry for posting on something thats a month old. I'm just extremely lonely and bored and who else to turn to than math :)
Another solution for 4 would be: five factorial divided by five divided by six, or five factorial divided by six divided by five :)
