Antarctic Adventure

Antarctic Adventure

Ernest Shackleton
Roald Amundsen

Introduction:
You have been selected to take part in one of the boldest expeditions of modern times to Antarctica. You will voyage to the icy continent to investigate and record the effect of climate change on the Antarctic Peninsula. You will plunge into the heart of this extreme environment, pushing the limits of human endurance. Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton, both renowned explorers, are planning to lead an expedition to the Antarctic for this purpose. You are able to choose which expedition you wish to join.

Task:
Examine the journeys made by these intrepid Antarctic explorers in the past.  Consider the qualities and characteristics that make a great leader and decide which of these two expedition leaders you would like to join. You will need to explain why you have chosen the leader you wish to accompany.
Think about the things they have in common and the things that make them unique. Find out how they lead a crew. How do they respond when things don’t go according to plan? How successful are they in achieving their goals? You will also need to consider the factors most important to you and the risks you are prepared to take in order to achieve your goals. Consider how you can reduce the risks.
You will present your decision and explanation to the group. You may choose how you present your work. Be prepared to answer questions and provide evidence to support your decision with examples from the expeditions previously led by these explorers.

Process:

First: You will read about both Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen. You may use books and magazines as well as the Internet links provided. Take notes on each explorer so that you have some facts to refer to later. As you read try to work out the personality characteristics of the men. Think about the virtues. What virtues do they demonstrate through their actions? Are these things that would make you want to travel with them?

Next: Decide which leader you would prefer to travel with. What is it about this person that makes them seem to be the best choice? Make sure you have examples of how they have demonstrated the qualities and characteristics you have identified as important.

Then: Develop your plan for your presentation. Think about how it will capture the audience’s attention and hold their interest. Will you have visual aids to support your decision? Make sure you are able to answer questions and provide specific examples.

Finally: Present your findings to the group

Assessment:
Your work on “Antarctic Adventure” will be evaluated using a rubric. This will be given to you before you begin. You will need to be familiar with and understand it so you will know what is required to achieve at each level.

Conclusion:
Learning about the lives and personalities of these intrepid explorers and deciding between them  will help you to understand what leadership involves and the factors that are important to you when making decisions.
